Here's what's going on this week...

Wanatah Historical Society Meeting

Come to the May 10 meeting of the Wanatah Historical Society at 10 a.m. and hear a presentation of the Belle Gunness Mystery. Bruce Johnson, chairman of the Gunness 100th anniversary committee of the LaPorte County Historical Society will make the one-hour presentation.

In 1908 the fire at the Belle Gunness farm, north of LaPorte, led to the discovery that she was one of the worst serial killers in history. After detective and journalistic work, Belle was believed to have killed more than 40 people.

Ongoing DNA testing may prove that she escaped to continue her gruesome career. Guests are always welcome at Wanatah meetings. Join us for this interesting look back at history.

Wanatah Townwide Garage Sales

The 22nd annual town-wide garage sale is schedule for 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 12-15.

Registration deadline is June 1 and cost is $6 for residents of Wanatah or residents having a 733 telephone prefix. Charge to others is $35. Donations toward advertising are accepted.

Maps listing sales will be available June 12 at the town hall, banks and area businesses.

Wanatah Town Council

The Wanatah Town Council will meet at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the town hall. Meetings are open to the public.

Cass Township Advisory board

The Cass Township Advisory board meeting originally set for May 6 has been postponed until 7 p.m. May 13 at Wanatah School.

Recipes needed

The Wanatah Historical Society is compiling recipes for a second cookbook. Please send your recipes to P.O. Box 156, Wanatah, IN 46390 or e-mail to whistsoc@verizon.net or to jbailey155@verizon.net. Deadline for submissions is May 12. Your participation is very much appreciated.

Lifeline Screenings

Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Wanatah, is sponsoring LifeLine Screenings at the parish hall on May 28. The five screenings are for osteoporosis, carotid artery, heart rhythm, aortic aneurysm and peripheral arterial disease. Appointments are required. Call (800) 635-0475.

American Legion Cookbook

The Koselke Mayfield American Legion Post 403 is making an American Legion Cookbook and welcomes all kinds of recipes from men and women. Suggestions are main dishes, desserts, salads, drinks, soups, wild dishes (venison, etc.), holiday recipes and appetizers.

Send recipes to Judy Barfell at P.O. Box 373, Hamlet, IN 46532, You can also leave recipes with the legion bartender or with Becca.

Any profit from the sale of these books will be donated to the legion auxiliary for their special projects. The legion post is at Second and Washington Streets in Wanatah.

Meals on Wheels

Volunteer drivers are needed for the Wanatah area Meals on Wheels program. Volunteers must have a reliable car with insurance coverage and be able to give an hour and a half for the program.

Volunteers are in many cases the only person shut-ins will see during the day. Those in the Wanatah area interested in volunteering can call (219) 874-9117.

Mothers' and Fathers' Day out

Faith United Methodist Church hosts a Mothers' and Fathers' Day out from 8 to 11:30 AM on the second Saturday of each month with adult supervision for the children. Games, crafts and snacks are featured. Call (219) 733-2909 for information or to register.

Real Services Meals for Senior Citizens

Real Services Meals for Senior Citizens are served at the Koselke Mayfield American Legion Post in Wanatah Monday through Friday. Any senior citizen age 60 and older is eligible to attend dinner. Please call the legion at (219) 733-2832 by 10 AM to reserve a meal the day before you wish to attend.

Doors open at 10 AM and serving begins around 11:30. A donation of $3 is asked. The meals are nutritionally formulated for a good diet plan. Area seniors are invited to attend. Come and meet your contemporaries and neighbors and enjoy fellowship with them.
